If there is better performance by a man in the history of film in America, it must be-《On The Waterfront》. Indeed, it is a Oscar film( including best picture& Best Actor) in 1954 which has been played by our business professor to educate us and loosely based on American real-life events, even though the politics of the era no longer manipulate the society now. This film was directed by Elia Kazan who is one of the most honored and influenced directors in Boradway and Hollywood history. Elia Kazan's on the waterfront is revered as a classic, as it was Elia Kazan's statement to the world about pursing a justice and conflicting his fate. Just as its name implies, this film describe a story back of the manual laborer who worked in a crooked dockers' union on the waterfront .

From an acting standpoint, the actors' performance is nearly perfect. As I remembered, the most memorable lines recorded in the most classical words within one century is:" you don't understand, I could had class, I could been a contender, I could have been somebody. Instead of a bum, which is who I am." (From Terry) The laborers' face may be rough and scraggy, they submit the worker organization and get paid by them, but like the type of people ones would expect to encounter when wandering into blue-collar working atmosphere. It happens anywhere that the emplyees do whatever great effort the boss asks for if you are not in the highest department in a corporation. It called "codes of Ethics" (define by Professor Arthur Menton, a experienced professor in Stony Brook University) which means become a part of the culture of the company in business field. Another remark by James T. said:" Elia Kazan completed this film with the weathered buildings, the dirty alley, and the gritty waterfront unlike other typical films in Hollywood ones. " That would be the realest scene reveal the old-fashioned American corruption life among the working class especially as a longshoreman. I was told some critical thinking by the professor with my popcorn. Terry Moalloy suffered a struggle that be loyal or betrayal to the union's mod leaders as other labors did. Although he nearly lose the love of Edie when he was found invovled to the unwitting muder, he is honest at least and brave enough to "betray" his brother and fight against the workers' union.
Furthermore, from this movie, you may see clearly the early unions to welfare of American worker is important which permeated nearly every aspect of American industry. In addiction, there are some situation in that corrupt climate: graft, drugs, not paid by the rules, etc.

This story happened during the World WarII. Could you think one or more connection with this film? Under what political or economic situation?
At last, feel free to ask me or correct me if there are something you confused about. Thank you for your reading and participating.
I think it's kind of dark movie, right? anyway,I saw 'modern times'
ReplyDeletewhich is acted and directed by Charlie Chaplin. In this movie,
charlie's acting also was great, and i think there are some similar between
two movies.
Sometimes, if I have no homework, i'll try that movie.
I also want to see his great act !
good work Lisha.
I hope your eyes getting better~
P.S : your business professor really act at ?!
One reason why I love China is that I can get almost every thing for free in China!
ReplyDeleteFrom the pronounciation class, I get to know that being an actor is really diffcult because he needs to keep his voice vivid!
Usually, good movies are attributed to their twisted plots, familiar and possibly real situations and effective expressions of human natures behalf of the positive sides, as hopes, loves and the reborn after a long-term repression. I don't understand people, of course including me,can still enjoy and appreciate the intrinsically identical films over and over again. there must be something in truth hidden in the origin of the universe.
Ohhh,
ReplyDeleteI watched this moive in business class because we have the same class): The film was based on a true story of a longshoreman tried to overthrow a corrupt union. I think the professor of our class want to tell us tread staff vert well if you are a CEO of a company. How do you think?
Thanks for sammarize this moive.
Good job
Every country have dark age of their history. For example Korea's dark age was Korean war. Our grandparents generation experienced this age, and had hard time. Fortunately I born after Korean war, so I didn't have to live in dark age. As a result I never imagine my grandparent generagions's lives. Like this movie a few director try to express our dark age, so sometimes we can find the movies like that. However many young people don't want to watch the dark movie include me. I can't say it's good or bad, but I think this chance that somebody introduce the movie like it is good. Thank you for your post. Take care.
ReplyDeleteLisha;
ReplyDeleteThis post is really amazing and I got interested immediately when I saw Marlon Brando's name. I have seen his movies the famous one God Father he was acting amazing over there.
I am sure he acts also perfect in this movie. I really like to watch old movies especially when it is black and white. Also, the movies topic is really interesting I would like to see it.
Actually, there are a lot of movies out there wating for me to watch them :)
Thanks for your post again!

I have never seen the black and white movie before. I think “ the waterfront” is a good start. After watching this film, I think I am fall in love with the black and white image because the image would not show the red color of blood if some one was killed in the movie. This film was recommended by your business professor. I thought it would be very helpful to know the background and society of the past America.
ReplyDeleteI like black and white movies, since they not only have the beauty of classic, but also shows how people think and behave in the past. I can't understand why your business teacher showed this movie in his class, since there is no connection with business. However, It is a really good movie to watch.
ReplyDeleteThere seems to have some conflicts inside the central figure. I can feel that he was struggling against his fate and the time his lived in. I'm not a history expert or a sociologist, but I think this movie reflects a certain culture of America in that time. The director tried to express his understanding of that time by putting a specific character into a certain position. Although I don't know the ending of this movie since you didn't tell us, I can see a man standing on his ground trying to do something different, which is absolutely admirable no matter he succeed or not.
I think most black and white movies are classical that they are popular until today. As you said, this movie was a Oscar film which including the best picture& Best Actor in 1954.The film reflects the situation for the United States at that time. It is a good movie that why your busines professor want you to watch it. Well....i can infer your business professor is an old man....
ReplyDeleteyou have a very clear summery about this movie, maybe i should take time to enjoy this movie. That is a way you can learn more the culture and history about america.
you always do a great work for blog, lisha!
Hi, Lisha.
ReplyDeleteYour post is really kind. : )
I can see the movie immediately.
I think American classic movie is very helpful for us to understand American history and culture. Thank you to introduce the classic movie. I didn’t know that you watch the movie in the business class, but I don’t envy you because the movies that Alexandra shows us in the American & film culture class are also really nice. :)
For Lisha:
ReplyDeleteGood movies to be shared. I believe that some of those old-fashioned black-white movie is even better than the movie we have with vorious kinds of technology now. That makes the film productors only think about how to use technology to make money instead of the meaning behind it. Such movie like could be very interesting just only because the story itself and how the actors/actresses act.
In your blog, you talked about corruption. What interesting is both of our classes (Both BUS and POL) has talked about corruption. I think this is an important issue in that age. At this point, I think this movie will be ineresting. I will watch this film if I have a change in the future.
Thanks for sharing.
For Joon:
ReplyDeleteyou're so funny to state you don't envy me. It seems you are happy as a bird foe the movies Alexandra showed. I took that class last seester too. And I can learn a lot of vocabulary and American culture in each movie. You should be grattitude in that class.
Dear Lisha:
ReplyDeleteSome interesting comments on this classic movie, "On the Waterfront." I am glad you included the "youtube video"--it's fun to watch and makes me want to see the film. I have not yet seen this famous film and need to! There are a few ideas that are still a bit unclear to me in your description of the film, but I appreciate your further explaining how your professor explained the movie to you. I am glad the movie made an impression on you. Marlon Brando is a gifted actor.

Dear Lisha,
ReplyDeleteThank you for your detailed introduction to this movie. It seems this movie relates to deep topic of American history which I am not familiar with. I think I need to watch this movie and know more about American history some day!
