Tian'AnMen Square

I want to introduce the Tian'AnMen Square to you since it is my most visited place. Tian'AnMen Square is the lage plaza near the center of Beijing, China, named after the Tiananmen.

The Tiananmen Gate was first buily in 1417 in the Ming Dynasty. It was named of ChengTianMen, which meaned the ruler of Ming Dynasty followed the God to rule his people in order to his people could not revolt him. This buiding was destroyed in 1451, and it was rebuilt in 1465 by the ruler of Qing Dynasty and was renamed of Tian'AnMen. Its appearance was similar with the picture of Tian'AnMen.

This is the picture of Forbidden City behind Tian'AnMen Gate. Lying at the center of Beijing, the Forbidden City, also called GuGong, was built during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. I think it is the world's largest place complex and cover 74 hectares, surround by a six meter deep moat and a ten meter high wall. There are 9999 builings in the Forbidden City, those buildings are just for royal family and servants to live. How do you think those builings? I think it is creazy. since yellow is the symbol of the royal family, it is the major color in the Forbidden City. Roofs are buily with yellow glazed tiles; decorations in the palace are painted yellow; even the bricks on the ground are made yellow by a special process.. Let's think about how luxurious the royal family are.Nowadays, the Forbidden City, or the Palace Museum is open to tourists from home and abroad. If you interest in the Forbidden City, you could visit to Beijing. (some information comes from Baidu.com)

I like to watch flag-raising ceremony in Tian'AnMen Square. One day, I woke up early in oder to watch flag-raising ceremony before I came to the United States. the flagstaff is 30-metre-tall, but the guards of honour should hoist a flag as the sun rise every day, they overcome a lot of difficulties, such as lazy and the time of sunrise, they need to practise hoisting a flag every day. I felt I can overcome any difficuties that I would meet in the U.S at that moment.

Thanks for your reading.

  1. The tian'an Gate is a symbol of China. Every chinese should notice that! It records the founding of new China, the development and expansion...I remember when i was 5 years old, my grandparents took me to visit beijing. And we went to The Tian'AN square and the Forbidden City. That was my first time and i didn't realize anything. When the second time i visited them, I felt proud of my country....
I am very sorry and apologetic that i've never watch flag-raising ceremony in Tian'AnMen Square or i cannot remember...Even i've been to beijing for many times....Because of my lazy, i can't wake up so early to see the flag-raising ceremony. However, when i read your post, i deicided to watch that once!

  2. For Bowen:

I'm really really gald to see you are posting about Tian'AnMen Square. Nor only because I comes from Beijing, but also because my high school (Beijing N.O. 161 High School) just lying behind Tian'AnMen Square. There is no doubt that my high school is the nearest high school that close to Tian'AnMen Square: just 5 minutes walk. You see the white bridge on the river in your picture? That is the bridge that I have ridden my bicycle to school everyday for 3 years. At every morning, when I saw the watchtower of Forbidden City (a really beautiful landscape), I felt like renewed, full of power. Oh, I can't stop my nostalgia, my homesicking...

As you mentioned the flag-raising ceremony in Tian'AnMen Square, I would like to say something. The flag-raising ceremony is really a "partriotism" thing. Just like American's "the star-spangled banner" or British "God save the Queen", we sing "March of the Volunteers" when we raising Chinese Flag in Tian'AnMen Square. I was moved by the situation when I fist saw the flag raising by the raising sun. I can say I'm very proud that I was born in China. I love my country, who didn't?

At last, there's some pictures for Watchtower of the Forbidden City, It's my favourite and real~~~~~ly beautiful. I hope you can just take a single looke.

  4. I have been there one time, and that was "amazing" because I was surprised by the complication and luxury of the structure of the Forbidden City. I was exhausted after the whole day's "affliction" by the tremendous size of the city. The extremely inflating human arrogance and the lack of practicality in structures of a city were beyong my imagination.

  5. I couldn't believe someone on earth had possibly built this sort of city before I saw it. "China is a country that has people",thought I,"so the sacrifice will always be people too."

  6. It's known to everyone that Tian'AnMen squre is one of the most symbolic places in China, since it has witnessed so many hostorical events and unforgetable moments. I stared to hear stories about that famous place since I was still a kid, so although I have been there only once in my life, I feel like it is my old friend. I also believe that everyone will be impressed after they watch the flag-raising ceremony. You are not going to kown how that ceremony will amaze you. The soliders who play in the ceremony are selected under extremely high standard and the training they go through is harder than you could imagine. Every soilder rise their leg on the same hight when they are striking, and the flag will rise acompanied by the sun in the exactly same time. I'd like to say that I am sooo proud of them.

  7. Dear Bowen:
That is amazing that there are 9999 buildings in The Forbidden City! It looks quite stunning. I like your description of the flag raising ceremony as well. Be careful with your spelling, however. You say the Tian' AnMen Square was "buily" in 1417--did you mean "was built"? Your overall history of the square is also fascinating. Thanks for this historical information about such a key spot in Beijing.

  8. Some of my friends went to China as a travel, and they said that it was very impressive. I didn't go to there, but if I'll have a chance to go China I want to visit there. I guess it must be luxury, and I can know that how The Fobbiden City was great. However like The great wall of China, many people could suffer to built that luxury place. It's little bit serious, but I think sometimes we have to see the both bright and dark side. ^^

  10. I saw many pictures of those ancient chinese palace in my history textbooks. I really want to go to China and see those significant buildings. Taiwan and China have similar cultures and histories. There is another Gu Gong in Taiwan. Because of the political elements, some precious antiques were moved to here. However, Taiwanese Gu Gong is smaller than Chinese one. I could not imagine that if I see those 9999 buildings, how suprised I will be.

  14. Hello, Bowen.
Thank you to let me learn a lot about Tian'AnMen Gate. Actually, I had no idea about that before I read your article. It looks really huge. It is very unbelievable that there are such a many buildings, and I have never known that the yellow color is the symbol of the royal family. Thank you, but I am curious about why the city’s name has the term ‘Forbidden’.
