"Protecting of the archaeological sites in southern Iraq".
Iraq is one the richest countries in cultural heritage and archaeological sites. Iraq has been the first civilized cities in the world which dates back to the sixth millennium B.C. Indeed, Iraq is the cradle of civilizations.
After the chaos of the recent war in 2003, many of these archaeological sites have been targeted by looters and thieves in order to get artifacts and treasures. As I am the antiquities inspector of the southern part of Iraq, the region which contains most of the great Sumerian cities, including Ur, Eridu, Larsa, Lagash, Girsu, and Umma, it had been my responsibility to do what I could to protect and record the archaeological and historic record of this area. This area has been mentioned in the Bible as “Garden of Eden”, and the land between the twin rivers (Mesopotamia): Tigris and Euphrates.
When archaeologist work as a policeman!!!!!
At the time of the 2003 war, my headquarters was in the Nasariyah Museum. Like all local residents, I stayed home during the battle for Nasariyah , but when I returned to

As time went by, we were able to make increasing numbers of regular patrols, especially after the Italian Carabinieri took over for the Marines in the summer of July 2003. In Italy, one of the tasks of the Carabinieri is to protect Italy’s rich archaeological past, so I was now working with a group who were already experienced in this work. In addition to regular patrols, they developed effective ways of rounding up large numbers of looters. After establishing a series of look-out points on the major sites, we also conducted raids. In our most successful sorties, we used multiple helicopters, so that the forces from one helicopter drove the looters into the hands of the others.
As the term for the presence of the coalition forces neared its end, the Department of Antiquities received funding to develop a new force, their own archaeological police. Since it was the Italian Carabinieri in Nasariyah who had arrived with training in the curbing of looting and who had developed effective tactics against the looting situation in Iraq, they were the people given the task of training this new force both in basic policing and in the tactics that had been successful in protecting archaeological sites.

Preventing the looting of the archaeological sites has only been part of our work; we have also been successful in retrieving looted artifacts. Some of these were collected when we arrested the looters on the sites, but most of the objects came from raids on homes of the looters’ organizers, most of who live in the market centers. The materials recovered from these raids provide a clear indication of the types of artifacts that have been targeted by the market. The numbers of restored artifacts was almost 14,000. The items range from the quite simple, including many items of baked and unbaked clay. Since Iraq lacks stone, most of our ancestors owned figurines, usually of women or animals, plaques whose decoration ranged from simple figures to elaborate scenes, as well as model beds, chairs, chariots, boats, and the like. The materials of unbaked clay are cuneiform tablets, which might record accounts, letters, contracts, and such. Of special importance seems to have been items of stone dating to the late-third and early-second millennium B.C. These include many stone vessels, cylinder seals, many early coins, glass vessels, and pieces of jewelry.
The patrols led us to protect most of archaeological sites in southern Iraq. I do believe that protecting protecting and preserving Iraq heritage are global task, for it is the heritage of humankind.
The reason why I tell this story is to sharing with how it is important to save the cultural heritage of the nations.
Look forward to know your feedback about my post.
I am appreciating you and thanks your attention in advance

there are two 'protecting' ^ ^ what ever..
ReplyDeleteI thought you as same as my country's archaeologists.
However I think there are more important reasons in your country
I feel sorry about the war, too
You will keep doing this major, right?
I'll pray for your health and your family
it was very interesting post amir! ^ ^
I know Middle East is a famous place in the Bible because I have read about it for a while. When I was imagining the pictures the Bible gave,I always thought of a place like a paradise. However, time is fleeting; a paradise might become a wilderness and the truth and mystery of history might just be buried out there somewhere for thousands of years. This is why I think history has its romance.
ReplyDeleteLike China, Iraq is a great site to have so many cultural heritages. However, your country was suffered the unpleasant war in the past. I think you are enthusiastic in your job, an antiquities inspector. Posting this article, you not only tell us the story about your country but also make more people know we should protect the cherish antiquities. Moreover, sometimes, I am not pleasure with the Metropolitan Museum. I know it is a good museum to collect different antiques around the world. Nonetheless, those priceless antiques should be disposed on the place where they are from.
ReplyDeleteDear Melody,
ReplyDeleteSometime I don't like to visit the Met. museum, for its collections of antiquities had been smuggled from different countries. The people in this museum doesn't care about legitimacy of what they have collected.
Best
When Iraq war ouccred I watch the news, and they said that the mob stealed the artifact and treasur of Iraq. I thought it is very sad incident because nobody can make artifacts even though he/she is richest people in the world. It is really good to know that people in the Iraq try to recovery the artifacts. Great Kingdom of history like Roman, Mesopotamia, Greek's artifacts and treasure is whole world's thing as my opinion. We have duty to protect these artifacts to show for whole generations.
ReplyDeleteDear Amir:
ReplyDeleteSome fascinating facts and details about your adventures and risks trying to capture looters and recover stolen artifacts. I thought It was especially interesting to hear about the helpful role the Carabinieri from Italy played in helping to patrol and recover archaeological treasures. Nicely explained!!!

For Amir:
ReplyDeleteYou are the person who can always suprise me. I didn't know your this interesing experience bofore I saw your blog, it's amazing!
There is no doubt that Iraq is one of the richest countries in cultural heritage and archaeological sites. It is said that the Sumerian Civilization is the first civilization ever appeared on the earth. Only by thinking about this and looking at your pictures could make me feel exciting.
These cultural heritages are priceless treasures for the whole homan races. Since I was born in a country with ancient civilization just like you did, I can understand you pretty well.
BTW, you looked professional in that picture you took with policemen.
Moreover, I would like to visit National Museum of Iraq oneday. I had seen the photos of the relics in the museum when I was a child, I wish I could have a chance to see them with my own eyes in the future.
ReplyDeleteI feel sorry about the looting of the archaeological sites in Iraq. It seems to be an urgent condition that thousands of old treasures are left unprotected due to the miserable war. But fortunately there are people like you who take the responsibility to prevent these treasures of humans from being looted. Your country should be proud of you and maybe they should give you an archaeological policeman license!! I think the looters and thieves deserve a hard punishment.
ReplyDeleteIt seems that your job is really interesting and exciting. A friend of mine is interested in archaeology, too, and he was excited when I told him there is an archaeologist in our class. I think it needs strong insistence to complete jobs like this, right? Why did you choose this work? Maybe you could provide some advices for my friends haha ~
Wish you have more accomplishments in your career!!
Amir:
ReplyDeleteI know that you are archaeologists.I had only know that iraq is the country of a lots of wars, but do not know Iray is one the richest countries in cultural heritage and archaeological sites.I know a lot from you the knowledge about the archaeological. In fact, I know nothing about these, i'm poor at the history, sorry about that.... But you tell us your experience that I worshiped. And i thought you are brave that some plazes in Iraq are dangerous, but you hesitate to explore some anncient artifacts...As a good scholar,You constantly to publicize and promote the archaeological sites in your country. Because of some peole like you, a lot of cultural relics have been excavated and protected down. So we can see more treasures in museum!
For Amir;
ReplyDeleteI read your blog carefully because there were a lot of words that I did not know. I already knew about Sumerian Civilization but your article made me more well-informed about it. It was very sad that when you returned from work and found out that your museum had been taken over but you overcame..
Thanks for your post again I feel more sophisticated now!!
Dear Amir:

Thank you for your detailed posting.
Hello, Amir.
ReplyDeleteActually, I am not familiar with a history. However, I am really surprised that you worked as the antiquities inspector of the southern part of Iraq. Although I am not familiar with the archeology, I know how much important it is to preserve the artifacts. I think that you did very meaningful work. I didn’t know that Iraq has been the first civilized cities in the world which dates back to the sixth millennium B.C. If I can, I want to visit Iraq that is the richest country in cultural heritage.
HI, Amir:
ReplyDeleteIt's so interesting to read every post of my classmate so that I can get to know them. I know you are antiquity inspector last semester and it's such a sacred job. In fact, just few people can be competent for this job. So to a certain degree, your career have no doubt of your ability.
Furthermore, the story of your"When archaeologist work as a policeman!!!!! " is very touching and I think you are the hero and a proud of Irap because you are so brave so convince the American during the dangerous times.
BTW, I always make a joke to say I want to marry a archaeologist because once the older I get, more fascinated he will be. Lol..
