Kung Fu Master

Well, did I surprise you with this topic I choose? I really want to see your facial expression when you are reading this.

Chinese Kung Fu, the fantastic combat skill, is also known as Chinese Material Arts. It is not only about the techniques that teach people how to fight, but also with great philosophy in it. OK, there’s too much to be talked about of Kung Fu, and I want to focus on the most famous Kung Fu master in the world: Bruce Lee, the Kung Fu Master, famous Hollywood Actor and National Hero in China.

Bruce Lee was born in November 27th 1940 and named Li Zhen Pan as his original Chinese name. He was born in a performer family which means both of his parents are actor/actress. He learned Tai Ji Quan when he was 7 and Yong Chun Quan (these are two branching of Kung Fu) when he was 16 as his Kung Fu foundation. Moreover, he learned some other branching including Shao Lin Kung Fu. These helped him when he built Jeet Kune Do, his own branching, in the following time. He joined some film shooting when he was young but none of them succeed; on the other hand, his Kung Fu quite good, he set up his own Kung Fu School when he was studying in University of Washington.

At that time, Kung Fu was not known by the world until Bruce Lee’s first Kung Fu Movie. In his movie, Bruce Lee made himself famous by the powerful aerial-triple-whirly kick and loud squeaking. After that, the strange squeaking has even become a mark as Bruce Lee., the movie that made people remember his name, was considered very successful in Hong Kong by selling 3 million Hong Kong Dollar. Thereafter, in his movie , he introduced a new weapon to the world: nunchaku (two sticks connected with iron chain). Because of his perfectly performance, nunchaku was once considered a fashionable in America; the police office in some states of the US even taught nunchaku to the cops after the nunchaku fashion swept across America.

So far, he was already quite popular in both Asia and America. However, Hollywood refused Bruce Lee to join them because the reward he asked was too much for an oriental actor in their biased mind. As a strike back, Bruce Lee made himself even more famous by his and with great ticket office income for both them; and that made those bosses of Hollywood have to surrender. After joining Hollywood, Bruce Lee had become well-known all over the world and began his life as a cinemastar.

However, it was really a pity that he died just after he had becoming more successful. He died before he finished his . There are many guesses for how he died, but even until now, there is no conclusion. His death has become a mystery. However, some people said he knew he was dying, because the he designed, he was acting like an peerless Kung Fu master who was trying to get a treasure at the top of a tower with defeating other five masters from other countries. In the end, he found out there’s no treasure but a piece of paper with this sentence: Life is a journey waiting death. No one knows he set up this sentence for purpose or not, but in the end, it became true.

Bruce Lee owned a lot of honor even after his death: Los Angeles city set July 8th as Bruce Lee Day; Times magazine evaluated him as the Hero and Idol in 20th century. Moreover, Bruce Lee is also the first Chinese People whose name and image had been printed on USA Stamp; such kind of honor that has only been given to three people as an actor or actress all over the world, they are Marilyn Monroe, Sean Connery (known as 007, James Bond) and Bruce Lee.

  1. It is the Chinese Kung Fu!! Kung Fu actually involves a scientific theory which is dragged from the metaphysical principle of "yin&yang". A master of Kung Fu must know how to manage his body energy and improve it. Also, it is the body energy that enhances the quality of every body movement.

  2. I heard that Bruce Lee has descendants, but they took advantage of Bruce Lee. They sold all objects that were related to Bruce Lee in an auction to make money. Therefore, his clothes and valuable stuff were spread everywhere. I thought his children or grand children should build the museum to memorize him or storage his stuff in the safe place.

  3. I always think Kung Fu is boy's thing which girls will not interested in. Acutually, we did some yin&yang presentation last semester. Teacher said I did a good job to the compelete explaination to that, but for me, I am having a hard time to present it because I'm not really interested in it. It seems most of information a bove is about Bruce Lee.indeed, he is a hero in the Kung Fu field. Afterall, I think my brother will be fond of the content in this post.
    Thank for your sharing.

  4. Thanks, Joshua, for all these interesting facts about Bruce Lee. As an American, I mostly knew him as a Hollywood star and so your facts about his early life and training were very interesting for me. His death also sounds quite mysterious, and I did not know he had a stamp made in his honor!

  5. Hi, Joshua~
Your post reminds me of childhood memories. When I was in elementry school, Bruce Lee was really famous with my peers. Bruce Lee was a legend. Although it was long time ago that he passed away, people still remember him like me. While reading your post about Bruce Lee, I think of the time when I imitated the actors of Bruce Lee with my friends.

I would like to say that I definatly agree with you. Learning how to fight is more for get known of yourself and human life. That's the reason why I say there's great philosophy in Kung Fu.

I'm not very sure about what you said, I just heard from the news that they sold some of Bruce Lee's estate, but they donate the money for the homeless people in an earthquake. It's such a pity if they take advantage from Bruce Lee, but at least we can say that Bruce Lee himself did a lot of good things with his money.

I would say it's a pity that I didn't have a chance to listen to your Yin-yang presentation last semerster, it must be very interesting. I also think that Kung Fu is not only set up for male, Kung Fu is a way of practicing yourself and get known the way of the life and the world. Maybe you can also try some Tai-Ji-Quan in the future.

  11. I've heard about Bruce Lee when I was still a little girl, and I know that he is very intelligent and hard working. So he deserve all these honor. I have heard one story about him. Actually he has a phobia about roach, a small common insect. In order overcome this, he spent a whole night catching a dozen of roach and made it into a necklace. It's a small story but tells us his personality. He is a man who born to succeed.

BTW, I heard that he died because of over-working but I don't know wether it is true or not.
